The literary landscape can often appear a confusing jumble of also-rans and almost-theres, peppered by successes like J.K. Rowlings and John Grishams who exist to make us feel bad. Often, the key to achievement in publishing is not what you know, or even who you know, it’s how delusional you are. But for those who don’t have friends in high places (real or imagined), here’s a breakdown of where you really fit on the totem pole (hint: look down).
