Literary Idols from Georgia
American Idol may have just crowned its most recent winner from Georgia, but bibliophiles have long known Georgia as home to many of our literary idols.
The Georgia Center for the Book maintains an extensive list of Georgia authors and also sponsors the Southern Literacy Trail (SLT), “a unique three-state organization that celebrates the writers of classic Southern literature.” The SLT website explains: Perhaps nothing unites Southerners more than their literature, unless it’s their houses. The homes of classic fiction writers from the South of the 20th Century have been preserved for visitors to see how they lived. Landmarks that inspired writers – courthouses, parks, churches, stores, banks – have been saved for contemporary readers to enjoy as settings for festivals and tours.
The Southern Literary Trail destinations for Georgia include:
Atlanta:
Margaret Mitchell
Joel Chandler Harris
Clayton:
Lillian Smith
Columbus:
Carson McCullers
Milledgeville:
Flannery O’Connor
Alice Walker
Moreland:
Erskine Caldwell
Savannah:
