5 Common Types of Industrial Floor Scales

Weighing scales are a staple piece of equipment used in warehouses and storage facilities. Apart from the primary function of a weight scale which is to determine the weight of products, certain types of scales have the capability to count the items included in a batch. This feature is extremely useful in inventory and shipping.

Out of the many different types of industrial scales and perhaps the most commonly used for storage, is a floor scale. But like other scales with various designs and functions, there are a few considerations you need to make in choosing the right type of floor scale required for an application. Some of the questions you need to ask yourself are:

  • How are products going to be loaded into the scale?
  • Is there are forklift available at all times?
  • Should the scale be mobile or stationary?
  • How much space is available for installing the scale?
  • What is the accuracy requirement?

By answering these questions, you are better able to define the characteristics of the floor scale you need for the intended use. In line with selecting a floor scale for industrial applications, the following are the most common floor scales available on the market today.

Standard floor scale

A basic floor scale is simple and straightforward in design. It is typically square, with weighing capacities ranging from 1,000 to 20,000 lbs. Although the design is basic, customers can choose from a variety of materials such as stainless steel, treaded plate, smooth plate, and mild steel. If there is no forklift available to load pallets onto the scale, you may need to install a ramp or use a pallet jack for loading.

Low-profile floor scale

The design is similar to a standard floor scale except that the scale is installed much lower into the ground for easier access with pallet jacks. These scales appear to have two side rails situated at floor level. Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks of a low-profile scale is that the sides can pose a difficulty for pallets with odd shapes and sizes.

Lift floor scale

If the application requires a more sterile approach, such as the capability to clean underneath the scale, the best option would be a lift scale. The design allows for lifting the top deck so that you can clean the undercarriage. The lift feature can be manual, gas assisted, or pneumatically controlled. These usually come in stainless steel to handle heavy washing and disinfection.

Heavy-duty floor scale

Some applications require a weighing scale that can measure large quantities. For example, if you need to weigh 20,000 to 50,000 lbs, you will need a particular type of floor scale for the job. There are manufacturers that can supply industrial customers with weight scales that have the capacity to measure massive objects.

U-scales

A u-scale is typically chosen when there is not enough scape for a ramp. A U-scale can easily allow a forklift operator to steer a pallet using a pallet jack into the scale’s center and set it down for weight collection.
